Chemical Peels

Although laser cosmetic procedures have captured popular attention, chemical peels continue to be appropriate for many patients. Peels have been around for many years and are both inexpensive and gratifying modalities for skin rejuvenation. Chemical peeling is a technique used to improve the appearance of the skin. A chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes it to separate, peel off, and allows new skin to regenerate. The new skin is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin, and may also be more even in color. Chemical peeling is used to treat fine lines, especially under the eyes and around the mouth. Wrinkles caused by sun damage, aging, and hereditary factors can be reduced or even eliminated with this procedure. However, sags, bulges, and more severe wrinkles do not respond to peeling and may require other kinds of cosmetic surgical procedures. Today, with the public’s increasing interest in rejuvenating skin and slowing the effects of the aging process, chemical peeling has emerged as an exciting anti-aging procedure.

Mild scarring and certain types of acne may also be treated with chemical peels. In addition, pigmentation of the skin in the form of sun spots, age spots, liver spots, freckles, blotchiness due to taking birth control pills, and skin that is dull in texture and color may be improved with chemical peeling. Areas of sun-damaged skin and scaling patches may improve after chemical peeling as well. Sunscreen and sunblock must be used in conjunction with the peels in order to reduce the risk of recurrence.

TCA Peel

A TCA peel (trichloracetic acid) is a medium, highly effective chemical peel that helps stimulate collagen growth and bring back the skins vitality and glow by treating fine lines, sun damage, pigmentation and pre-cancerous spots.

Advantages

A TCA peel can help improve your skins texture, skin tone and fine lines. It can also help treat severely sun damaged skin that in result has produced dark spots, age spots and overall pigmentation. A TCA peel is safe and may be used repeated times to achieve optimal results. However, sags, bulges, and more severe wrinkles do not respond to peeling and may require other kinds of cosmetic surgical procedures. At Foothill Dermatology Medical Center we can help determine the most appropriate type of treatment for each individual case.

Preparing for Your TCA Peel

A thorough evaluation is needed to determine if you are a candidate for a TCA peel. In some cases different treatment options may be needed in order to give you optimal results depending on your skin type and overall goal of improvement.

To properly prepare your skin for your TCA peel, a pre-treatment of tretinoin 4-6 weeks prior will help the peel penetrate deeper in the skin. Tretinoin is a derivative of vitamin A and will help you shed the outermost layers of the skin to give you lasting and more intense results.

After Treatment

Each treatment takes about 30 minutes long and although you will see results with only one TCA a peel, we recommend three sessions to give you optimal results. After your procedure, your face will be red and tight for the first few days and then followed by peeling that is compared to the effects of a sunburn. It is very important to avoid the sun and wear sunscreen at all times to achieve better outcomes and avoid any complications.
